Dr. Seuss said it best: "A person's a person, no matter how small." Or how large, or how loud, or how clean, or how smart. Whether they have an IQ of 40 or 140, all children are important, and all children can learn. All children deserve to be valued. And their value shouldn't decrease because they struggle in the classroom. We shouldn't discount them because they can't read, can't sit still, or have behavior issues. I know they aren't always easy, but special needs kids ALWAYS have worth. As a teacher, it's our job to find out where they excel (drawing, running, smiling) and remind them how great they are. They deserve to win just like everyone else. And you know what?? I've found that the kids who struggle the most tend to appreciate the victory all the more. That's why I choose to teach special education, and that's why I have the greatest job ever. |
